David J. Schmit is an Associate Attorney in our Concord office. He joined LFLM in 2019 and defends insurance carriers, third-party administrators, and self-insured employers in all areas of state workers’ compensation defense.
Mr. Schmit received his B.A. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and his MA degree and Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University, Washington D.C. Mr. Schmit is a member of the State Bar of California and admitted to practice before all California courts, the District of Columbia, and certain federal courts including the United States Supreme Court.
Following law school, Mr. Schmit spent four years in private practice where he had extensive criminal jury trial experience in Washington D.C. Thereafter he spent two years in the United States Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit where he researched and wrote memorandum regarding pending motions. Since 1980, Mr. Schmit has been litigating workers’ compensation cases, including Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act. He has also practiced in the areas of maritime law, civil personal injury, insurance coverage, wrongful termination and subrogation. Before joining LFLM in 2019, Mr. Schmit founded Schmit Law Office in 1985, practicing workers’ compensation and counseling clients in California employment law and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Mr. Schmit is actively involved in the San Francisco Industrial Claims Association and lectures statewide on a variety of workers’ compensation topics including Labor Code section 132a and psychiatric injury. He was a contributing author of The Longshore Textbook.
